Hi,

Tonight KOOP radio's program 'This Great White North' played my track Oranges. It was a great show and a privilege that I was included in it. Thanks Doug. You can check out KOOP radio at: www.koop.org

Telephone Call

HI! ... wow it's been a while since I blogged. I wouldn't be surprise if everyone has given up and no one will read this, but I'm posting it either way!

Life's been going.

Ok, so anyways, I'm blogging because I've uploaded a few songs. It's part of a semi-release thingy I'm calling Telephone Call. It's 4 parts and you can hear it at a couple of places. I think it's fun, of course there are problems with it I'm not totally happy with, but I'm getting better at not letting it get to me as much. It was all recorded using ... uh a telephone? ... no it's my vintage Astatic mic. Just one mic, on a stool, and I played for it.

You can listen to it at my Soundsauce page by clicking the big 'My Music' icon on the right, or by going to my CBC radio 3 page by clicking HERE.

That's it for now, I'll try not to wait so long before I blog again.

Two New Songs!

I recorded two new songs this weekend.

The first is a 'Sailing Song' and is replacing 'Hope for the Unemployed' on my myspace page. I was getting bored with 'HFTU', glad to replace it, but am kinda sad that there are no harmonica songs on my myspace page.

The other one I recorded was recorded for www.songfight.org. Songfight is where a bunch of artist write and record a song about a certain theme and then listeners vote on which they liked the best. I found out about it because this weeks theme was regarding one of my favourite Internet comics www.qwantz.com. I wrote 'We Were not Meant to be' based on the contest theme (if you go to www.songfight.org you can read more about it and read the actual comic that inspired it.) So sometime this week check out that site and vote for which one you like the most, ... it would be pretty cool if you voted for mine, but if you think another deserved it more then that's fine.

You can hear both new songs by clicking here, or by clicking the big 'My Music' icon on the right.
You can also hear 'Sailing Song' by clicking here and viewing my myspace page.

If you didn't notice because you check updates on only Sundays, I updated in the middle of the week last week, the post is just below!

"What makes a good song? Uneffected, courageous honesty."

Crazy unexpected news. Just a few weeks ago I posted a few songs on CBC radio 3 (I mention it on the blogpost below), and I just found out that on May 9th my song Oranges was chosen as the Track of the day! Craig Norris chooses a song, probably a new one, that he likes and does a short podcast on it. He talks about things like why he choose it, etc, and then plays it. AND HE CHOOSE ORANGES! My face and my song was on the homepage of CBC radio 3 on May 9th! and in turn people added that song to their playlist!

WOOT!!!

If you click here you can see the post:

And if you click this, you can hear his podcast.

He mentions how it reminds him of getting lost and fiddling with directions on a summer day on Canadian back roads, and then goes on to say how he would put it as his closing credits if he ever has a T.V. show in the CBC!

Thanks for listening Craig.

I'm on the radio!

Well not really, for a few reasons. I signed up to have my music on CBC radio 3, which is for the most part an online radio station. As of right now, me posting this, my music still hasn't fully gone through, hopefully it will soon. Right now I have Bones, Oranges and Country Roads (with the drums) on it. I didn't really know what to add though.

... anyways, go listen! spread the word? please ... please , Ö

Guitar and Banjo #1

I worked on recording a new song, but it kinda got thrown together at the end, so I'm not truly happy with it. The idea I was going for definitely came across, but there are places where I wish it would have gone differently, and small mistakes ... banjo goes out of tune at one point. Anyways, I made sure I had something new to post because I said that I would.

So here it is! Guitar and Banjo #1, you can hear it by clicking here, or by going to the big "My Music" icon on the right.

Guitar and Banjo #1, ... hmmm, either I'm too lazy to think of a real name for it, or maybe there are going to be more similar ... or maybe both.

... first day of my new co-op job starts tomorrow, not really looking forward to that.

BACK!

It's been almost a month since I've last blogged. It started off as me getting sick and now having anything to post, and then went into a difficult exam period which took all of my time until now. During that time I worked on a few songs and finally have some time to record them and get them up here. ... so very soon I will be posting some music.

If you are still checking my blog after that big gap, thanks! and it is back to normal operation.

(Archives) Well Dawn, The Day Is Done

I used to play my broken banjo a lot more than I do now, and will definitely be changing that. It's a fun instrument. ... I think I need to fix it up properly. I also always record my ideas down no matter how trivial or underdeveloped they are, and sometimes when I listen back to them I find things that I never really noticed before. If you bring these two ideas together you come up with the song I posted today. It's an idea I had last summer for my banjo, and I think I'm going to relearn it and do a higher quality recording of it, perhaps with more instruments in it. ... I think my 12 string would be great in the background. Because this is an older, pretty much untouched, recording, I'm classifying it as (Archives).

So anyways, new song (well dawn, the day is done), you can hear it by clicking here, or by clicking on the big "My Music" icon to the right.

I went to see Apostle of Hustle on the weekend and they were great, but I want to talk about one of the opening artists. Her name is Jade McNelis and she was great. Very soft, dark, melodies on the piano with an amazing haunting voice. I found out that she is on the same record label as memphis (well just the two of them are) so that's awesome for her! I encourage everyone to check out her myspace page! I love "Life in Grey".

Watch Me Eat Oranges!

Some new things.

First off, I have a new song posted. Like most of my songs, I was trying to finish one of my old songs and got caught up with a new idea. The new song is called Oranges, and it's a upbeat country-ish instrumental song. It's fun. I tried a new technique with the lead guitar to make it sound more vintage, I also tried some different techniques to making the song sound like it was hastily put together but with good results. Like a bunch of musicians hanging out and coming up with a cool idea. I also replaced the more depressing "The Something Missing", with "Oranges" on my Myspace page.

So new song is called Oranges, and you can hear it by clicking here, or by clicking the big "My Music" icon on the right.

Secondly, I found my old webcam and decided I'd post a video of my guitar playing. Try out a different style of media. I hosted the video on youtube.com, as well as posting it on my myspace page. I play a variation of one of my favourite Leo Kottke songs, "The Fisherman". I play the song differently then him, and also in a different key. Let's say it's "inspired" by Leo Kottke's The Fisherman. Either way, you can watch that by clicking here! Or, by going to my myspace page.

... coolbeans.
